Review

This is a useful book, but it does not really reflect the title. Although the basics of milling do not take long to describe, this book (inadvertently) assumes quite a lot of prior knowledge of machine tool operation.

The approach of the book is to talk you through the construction of a range of essential milling machine accessories (T-nuts, angle-plate, parallels, work-piece clamps). More complex projects then follow, namely a boring head and a tool grinding attachment. All good stuff, but doesn’t really cover the basics very well. I was hoping for the milling equivalent of Sparey’s The Amateur’s Lathe, but this book falls well short of that standard, as it doesn’t contain the same wealth of tips, tricks and techniques.
