Review

Another excellent book in the workshop practise series. Covers the design and manufacture of spur gears, bevel gears and worm gears in as much detail as the model engineer will need. Describes the Eureka form-cutting tool which can be used for making gear cutters. However, the method described to make the gears (i.e. make Eureka tool and button tools to then make the gear cutters and finally the gears) takes some dedication. There would appear to be an easier way to make the gears, which is to make a hob. A single, relatively easy-to-make hob can be used to make gears of any number of teeth. I will try to remember to include details of this if I get around to reviewing the Eureka tool on this site. If I forget and you are interested, please contact me.

There was an article on making hobs in a recent edition of Model Engineer (around June-July 05).
